Places of local interest

St Catherines Point

On the harbour entrance, the fort St Catherine’s Castle, is accessible on foot from Readymoney Cove. It was built during the reign of Henry VIII to defend the harbour entrance.

Blockhouses

Either side of the harbour are the ruins of square blockhouses that were built around 1380, between which chains were hung to prevent the entrance of unwanted ships. The Polruan blockhouse is approachable by foot, but the Fowey one is not.

St Fimbarrus Church

Dedicated to St Fimbar who passed through Fowey early in the 6th Century. Destroyed by French marauders, it was rebuilt in 1460 by the Earl of Warwick. Located in the centre of Fowey, the Church is generally open to visitors during the day and details of sermons are posted outside. Kenneth Grahame, of Wind in the Willows fame was married in this church. It is said that Fowey provided the inspiration for the Wind in the Willows and that Fowey Hall was the model for Toad Hall. (Grahame stayed at The Fowey Hotel many times and Daphne DuMaurier, who had a home in nearby Ferryside was also a frequent visitor).

Place House

Visible as the tower which stands behind the Church, Place has been the family home of the Treffry family since 1326.

Fowey Museum

Located in the Town Hall and open between May – September.

Daphne DuMaurier Literary Centre

Next door to the Church, this small centre contains information about Fowey’s many literary connections.
