Mac 'In Residence' at The Fowey

The Daily Mail's celebrated cartoonist, Mac, will be 'Artist in Residence' at The Fowey Hotel this coming May!

Mac (real name Stanley McMurty) will be in residence at the Fowey Hotel during the week beginning Monday, 9th May. Guests will have the opportunity to chat to Mac about his life as a cartoonist and he will be holding a workshop with local residents and college students. He will also be working on a new cartoon, which he plans to donate to the Fowey Hotel for a charity auction.

He will also be hosting a mingle at the hotel, which he will be attending with his good friend Valerie Singleton, of Blue Peter fame. Mac is also looking forward to visiting the Daphne Du Maurier Festival, Fowey’s well established arts festival, which will be running during part of his stay.

Mac's first venture into cartooning was as a trainee animator for Nicholas cartoon films in 1956. Under the inspired tutelage of Nick Spargo he eventually became a key animator and worked on animated films for TV and cinema for ten very happy years. During that period he was sending freelance cartoons to Punch magazine, The Daily Sketch, The Daily Mirror and any other newspaper or magazine which carried cartoons. During a lull in the animation business Mac was offered a trial on the Daily Sketch as political and social cartoonist. The Daily Sketch was taken over by the Daily Mail in 1970 and Mac has been working for the paper (on a trial basis!) ever since. Mac was awarded an MBE in 2004, has been voted ‘Cartoonist of the Year’ many times, and in 2000 was given the ‘Master Cartoonist Award’ for lifetime achievement and excellence.
