Fowey happenings
Some of the best events...
There is a huge variety of events in Cornwall happening throughout the year from major events like the Royal Fowey Regatta or Daphne Du Maurier Literary Festival to music, craft, floral shows and water events such as gig-racing. It is hard to cover everything so we've done the next best thing - a potted list of the best in and around Fowey.
May gets off to a cracking start with the Daphne Du Maurier Literary Festival, May 13th - 22nd. Various venues in Fowey play host to a wide cross-section of events. Visit the Festival website for full programme details (click on the picture link, RHS).
Also starting in May are the tours of private gardens - fantastic this year. You can take a tour of the Headland Garden, across the estuary from The Fowey every Thursday between 2 - 6pm from May until September. The Eden Project's Festival in Bloom continues until May 28th and then it starts to gear up for its popular summer Eden Sessions concerts.
For a bit of learned exercise, why not take a walking tour of Fowey? These take place every Tuesday, meeting at The Quay at 11am between May - September.
Big night on June 25th as it is Party in the Park Time - fantastic music, picnic fun, beautiful surroundings at Lanhydrock.
For steam engine fans or a great family day out, the Boconnoc Steam Fair is on at nearby Boconnoc House between July 23th - 25th.
The biggest summer event in Fowey kicks off on August 15th when the Fowey Royal Regatta gets underway. It is a week of fun-filled events on and off the water with two key highlights: On the Thursday at 6pm precisely, the Red Arrows begin what has to be one of the most spectacular of its many shows due to the position of Fowey. From the Fowey hotel the view is amazing as you can see above and below the planes! That is followed by the traditional trek around Fowey with the Giant Pasty before it is divided up and shared with everyone. The last night has a parade of light along the river Lerryn into Fowey followed by a grand firework display.
This year the Christmas Fair is back and it gets bigger and better each year. December 4th - 5th are the dates to mark on your calendar. Make the most of it and enjoy a short break at The Fowey whilst doing some different Christmas shopping.
For eclipse fans.....
The popularity of Fowey as a cruise destination is growing and more ships are arriving in Fowey. The sight is incredible as daylight is more or less blanked out as the huge ships make their way up the Fowey estuary. It is not that different to witnessing an eclipse of the sun!! For those who want to experience the sensation firsthand, the cruise programme for Fowey is:
July 29th - 31st The World
August 11th and September 9th Silver Cloud
August 20th The Braemar
August 24th The Black Watch
September 3rd Silver Whisper
Daphne Du Maurier Festival
May 13th - 22nd. Fantastic line-up of famous faces of literature, music and the screen. Every year the Daphne DuMaurier Literary Festival gets bigger and better and 2010 is no exception.
Fowey Royal Regatta
Fowey Royal Regatta, August 15th - 21st, 2010, is a calendar highlight and a favourite flying sortie of the Red Arrows (Thursday).
Boconnoc Steam Fair
July 23rd - 25th, 2010. The Boconnoc Steam Fair is held on the beautiful Boconnoc Estate, Lostwithiel and is a vintage "steamy affair" worth visiting.
