Well the sun is out and the sky is blue and it is clear to see why Fowey is so popular throughout the year. I have this afternoon brought in my camera in order to take some dust shots for our photo library (hopefully you will see the results on the hotels website in a few weeks).
We have had a visit this afternoon from a badger specialist regarding the furry visitors that we thought were residing on the Tea Garden. It has been confirmed that thankfully we do not have a sett and it appears that it is a lone badger that has been visiting the Gardens in the evening - so normal business is now resumed and Afternoon Cream Teas will now be served (hopefully) from the last bank holiday in May.
I have spoken to a guest this afternoon who has mentioned that the hotel is still listed as a Best Western Hotel on some (less popular) sites. I can confirm that we are definitely no longer a Best Western Hotel and we left the Best Western group approximately 4 years ago – needless to say we will be addressing this issue very shortly.
A few spooky events have been occurring at the hotel over the last few months and I am considering inviting Yvette Fielding and her team from ‘Most Haunted’ around to see whether there is any super natural activity within these four walls!
The Night porter has mentioned that the lift came down to the first floor in the middle of the night, you may think that this is not too spooky however when the lift got to the ground floor, there was no one in it!
Another night the Night Porter mentioned that he heard footsteps in the hallway and when he went to investigate there was no one around. Finally, we had a (psychic) lady saying that she was unable to go into the Restaurant at the hotel due to her seeing the presence of a young soldier who walked up to her and pleaded with her that he was innocent! On investigating this – it is likely that the hotel was used throughout the second World War as a base for officers and from what the lady saw it is possible that a court marshal was being carried out at that time – all very interesting!!! I will keep you informed of any other spooky occurrences…….
Well contrary to what the forecasters have said the sun is out and the sky is blue. Every table and chair on the balcony has been taken this lunchtime by the constant stream of arriving guests choosing to take their complimentary tea in the sunshine! It’s quite unheard of for the start of the Bank holiday to be blissfully sunny, however I’m confident that the good weather will stay for a few more days yet – fingers crossed for the Easter Egg hunt on Monday. As it is we are now holding it on The Beer Garden due to the badger sett - if we have bad weather too we may need to consider an indoor version!
Despite it being Easter I am taking Saturday off, this being due to my amazing grandad reaching the ripe old age of 99! We are holding a birthday party at his home and plan to have all 4 generations there. We believe he has made it to 99 due to his sporty lifestyle when he was younger. He was a keen cyclist in his 20’s and 30’s as well as playing a lot of football. Being a fireman and in the RAF throughout the second World War, his heart, mind and spirit has always been strong. I am sure tomorrow will be a great day….
Finally, before I head off to eat my own body weight in chocolate Easter Eggs, I though it would be fun to share a few Easter jokes with you;
Q. Why was the Easter Bunny so upset?
A. He was having a bad hare day!
Q. Why shouldn’t you tell an Easter egg a good joke?
A. It might crack up!
Q. How many chocolate bunnies can you put into an empty Easter basket?
A. Only one because after that, it’s not empty!
Sorry …… Happy Easter!!!
Well Sunday night saw another successful Fowey Foodies evening with 22 local people enjoying the food, service and atmosphere. This was enhanced by Michael Teague and his musical partner playing some fine ‘cocktail jazz’ style music. With the clocks going forward the guests were able to enjoy the views of the estuary for another hour before the sun went down –so all in all a really successful evening.
I was even more pleased than usual as I had invited a journalist and her husband in to sample the menu and carry out a little write up for the local Cornish Guardian newspaper. They both cleaned their plates and had an enjoyable stay so hopefully the write up will be promising.
I have had a little surprise recently involving some rather furry creatures that seem to have taken up residence in the hotel’s Tea Garden. Our gardener told me recently that he thinks we may have a badger sett in the garden and they are starting to cause havoc burrowing and foraging the grass, so it is looking likely that we will be holding the annual Easter Egg hunt on the Beer Garden this year just to be on the safe side….. Rest assured normal service will be resumed once Ratty, Toady and Mole show up to relocate them to a more appropriate dwelling.
Continuing the literary theme, Daphne Du Maurier week will soon be here again and we are looking forward to yet another exciting line up. The festival is already looking really busy this year (both at the hotel and at the “Festival Village” itself) and this is a really great sign for those of you who love the arts.
