Lord Baden Powell would have been proud!!
Dibb, Dibb, Dobb!!
Well they say it all happens in hotels and last night will be chalked up as one of those memorable evenings…. I was all ready to set off for the night when at 11pm four small (rather unwashed) faces were staring up at me from behind the reception desk. There were three French and one English speaking scouts asking if I could provide them with a room for the night as they has missed the last passenger ferry over to Polruan!!! On asking them where the chief scout was they politely informed me that he was on his way and there would in fact be 10 scouts in total requiring somewhere to sleep for the night.
Not wanting to send the poor little mites out into the cold night, the Night Porter and myself rallied around and made a few pots of hot chocolate which was very gratefully received. Once the chief scout turned up (followed by the 6 other scouts) he was then able to explain the situation in full, detailing that they would not need a bedroom as such, just somewhere where they could roll out their back packs. Being a girl guide myself (a few years ago!!) I thought this was great fun and we promptly moved all the furniture to the sides of the main lounge and the scouts eagerly rolled out their bedding rolls. The final request before bed was whether I minded if they could use their Billy cans outside in the car park as they had not eaten yet and were very hungry. The dish of the day was going to be tinned ravioli yum, NOT!! In order to prevent one of our guest’s cars from going up in flames I thought it would be wise to offer to heat up the Ravioli in the kitchen – Thank goodness for Microwaves!!
After all the excitement I left Stuart (Night porter aka babysitter) to it at around 12:15am. Secretly he was loving it really and I am sure he was grateful for the company…
From what I heard they were up and out by 7:15am the next morning and met up with their leader at the ferry point. An eventful night was had by all! Its this kind of fun that makes our jobs varied and interesting. Never let it be said that The Fowey Hotel won’t accept a challenge!!!
